Default Monitoring Function

This post intends to provide an explanation toward user's confusion regarding the value of the data resulting from Monitor.

Link Utilization data (data resulted from Monitor) are based on information collected from SNMP polling, and represents the actual bandwidth usage at the time. Bandwidth percentage is calculated based on the value of the 'bandwidth' command or default value if the command is not set on the interface. You can move your mouse over the device to see bandwidth configuration placed on the device.

If your bandwidth value is still not correct, use 'Interface Info' (Right click device in Workspace Pane and select Device Setting) to verify the bandwidth and restart the Monitor function.

Hope this helps

I have noticed that the utilization on monitored interfaces over 100mbps (aka GE, oc12... ) consistantly report the untilization way under the actual when the utilization gets much above 100mbps. For example, on a GE interface running at about 90mbps, monitoring seems to be generally accurate and reports utilization of about 9%, but when the link is pushing 600mbps monitoring reports utilizaition in the mid teens (eg about 15%) when it should be 60%.

We are trying to repeat this in the lab... (a bit challenge to create 600 mbps traffic)

Did you spot this a few times? Any information along the line of setup would be very helpful...

BTW: Internal code review did not find obvious issues...

Default Re: it's probably 32-bit rollover

I suggest you don't have to replicate this but check if the value (either in NB or in the device's MIB) is a 64-bit counter or not.

typically if it's using a 32-bit counter from IF-MIB, what you're seeing plateau around modulo(112Mbps) is the rollover.

Gig+ or OC-n need 64-bit high-capacity counter implementations in their MIB for the relevant OIDs else you will experience this issue.

If NB devs can confirm they support 64bit counters in their calculations (or choice of OID), best to verify your vendor's support for them in their MIBs.

good luck,

R.
