Default How to convert device icon format from VSS to EMF so it can be used in the WS

**Problem:

The standard device icon in VSS format cannot be used by NetBrain Workstation directly, so we need do some modification.

**Solution:

The NetBrain icons must be Enhanced MetaFile (EMF) formatted. You can use Microsoft Visio to open/edit a Visio stencil file and save it as an EMF file.

By default there are five icons for each device type indicating five different statuses:

• Not in monitoring: indicates that the monitor is not turned on. By default the icon color is blue.
• Removed: indicates that the map has been validated and the device was removed from the workspace. By default the icon color is gray.
• Down: indicates that the map is monitored and the device is down. By default the icon color is red.
• Unstable: indicates that the map is monitored and the device is unstable. By default the icon color is yellow.
• Up: indicates that the map is monitored and the device is up. By default the icon color is green.

So when you add an icon for a device type, you need to create five EMF files corresponding to the different filled color for the same shape. Follow these steps to create an EMF file:

1. Open the stencil file with Microsoft Visio. Create a new Visio file and drag the icon you like to the file.

2. Right-click this icon and select Shape > Ungroup to ungroup the components of this icon. Right-click a component then select Format > Fill to open the Fill window. Click the drop-down menu of the Color field to select the color that you need. Modify other components in the same way. Save this file as an Enhanced MetaFile (EMF).

3. Repeat step 2 to generate other EMF files corresponding to the four remaining statuses.

4. Add the icons to the Netbrain Workstation and change the icons for the relevant device type to match the new icons. Refer to the Workstation Helper for details on this process. Press the F1 key to bring up the helper. The “change device icon” section is under chapter 5, in the “Edit Maps” section of the End User manual.

**Applicable To: NetBrain OE/CE all versions
